Questions and Answers

How many and what type of media sources are searched?

Over 12,000 of the world's national and international daily newspapers, business newspapers, local newspapers, major trade, business, and academic journals, regional business publications, industry newsletters, corporate news releases and newswires.

What are the key differences between your adverse media search and just entering the candidate's name into Google?

Firstly our media check searches specifically for articles in relation to crime or terrorism. An Internet search will return links and stories on any topic, the vast majority of which will be irrelevant to employers. Secondly, the media check searches established international, national and local newspapers so an article must be newsworthy to be published. Conversely an internet search will return links to any web page for anyone sharing your candidate's name – links to pages on social media sites alone could run into 10 plus pages. Finally, an internet search will concentrate more recent articles higher in the search results and will probably only go back in time just a few years. Our media check reaches as far back as 1971 and ranks articles by importance.

My candidate has a common name does this mean I will get lots of false positive matches?

Details of any possible matches on your candidate from the Adverse Media Check included within our report are: the source, title and publication date of the article and an extract including the key details and reference to your candidate's name. We will also list where we have investigated and been able to 'qualify out' articles, providing an explanation why we do not think it is your candidate.
